Badminton is my sport since I was a teenager. In fact, I joined in several badminton competitions in our city. I'm sure, many of us love this racquet sport, too. Indeed, this is one of the
most popular sports in the world. But did you know how this sports became known?
It was started in the land of India with its original name, Poona. The interesting history of poona began as a game for children referred as the battledore and shuttlecock. The player hit the shuttlecock, (or a bird due to its feather), using a battledore. It was first played without using a net. At that time, British officers in India learned about poona, and brought this sport to England. In year 1873, some visitors played poona at the lawn party on Badminton estate. The game became famous, and many elite people got interested in this activity. Then, soon it was called "the
Badminton game."
The first court was an hourglass shape, then in year 1901, a rectangular shape court became official. In 1893, 14 clubs merged and established the Badminton Association. The group helped in creating standard laws for this sport. The association was also the first introduced the All-England Badminton Champions. And from then, Badminton became known to other countries, including America and Asia.
