The term biathlon is used for any sport that combines two sporting disciplines into one event. Although this term can be used for any sport, it is usually associated with the Winter Olympics event which combines cross-country skiing with rifle shooting.
This sport, like many Olympic events, has its origins in the military. It was first practiced by Norwegian soldiers on patrol in the mountains. To relive boredom, and to instill a spirit of competitiveness and brotherhood, border patrol companies competed against each other. Eventually the sport became accepted throughout Europe and was finally accepted as an Olympic event in 1960.
The biathlon is, like many Olympic sports, an ironic event; originally used as a way to train for war, now it is used as a means to foster ideals of brotherhood and unity.
